18 Facts That’ll Make Uou Want to Strength Train

14 years ago I started working out.

I started with HIIT/cardio, low calorie and low carb diets 🫣

I worked out as often as I could, so I could get leaner, faster 🫠

Rest days were for p*ssies and people with excuses 😶‍🌫️

I didn’t realise that I was doing the OPPOSITE of what I needed to do to get a strong, lean and toned body. One that still had heaps of energy, one that was actually truly healthy inside, one that wasn’t mentally and emotionally strung out, and a mindset that didn’t compare myself to every single woman 24/7. I learned the hard way, but nonetheless, I learned.

Fast forward to competing in Olympic Weightlifting, working sports dieticians, becoming a HMI Health Coach, healing my constant gas and bloating, meticulous calorie counting, and poor body image… that old version of me has been left in the dust.

Along my quest for a banging bod’, which led me down some painful pathways, and eventually walking through the door of a healing one, I learned some amazing facts about strength training — which is what converted me from cardio/HIIT workouts to strength training.

There are plenty of myths about lifting weights, the biggest one being that it makes women manly. FALSE. This is programming in society, one that stems from observing bodybuilding. There is nothing healthy about bodybuilding — getting to insanely low body fat percentage, eating low calories, being orthorexic with food choices, the strain that body building workouts put on your body (which only serves to age it prematurely), and the constant obsession of your body… your divine vessel, which does so much more for you than just win a judge’s approval, or attracting a potential partner.

Many bodybuilding meal plans are low calorie and low carb (depending on the cycle), and the exercise plan requires working out almost daily, for long hours, lots of different isolation exercises, and lengthy cardio… no thanks.

In my Strong With Amya community, I show women that they can look and feel amazing by only working out 3-4x per week, eating plenty of carbs, and having time for things they love. The program is 8 weeks long, but I’ve had clients see changes as early as 4-5 weeks in. It’s really that simple.

So anyway, let’s revisit the 18 facts that will make you want to strength train:

  1. Build lean muscle mass that gives you a firm and shapely appearance. This is done by strength training, NOT cardio.

  2. More lean muscle mass increases your metabolism, which makes your body more effective at using calories, even when resting. If you love to eat, this is great news for you.

  3. You use more energy when you strength train than if you did aerobic exercise, so you can be more efficient with your time.

  4. You improve your posture and balance. Say goodbye to the hunch back, and hello to more efficient breathing — which affects your sleep, your teeth, and so much more.

  5. Decrease your risk of old people injuries.

  6. Increase bone density and reduce risk of osteoporosis and fractures.

  7. Burn excess fat more easily.

  8. Reduce stress and anxiety.

  9. Sleep better at night.

  10. Improve your mobility and flexibility.

  11. Can help you to improve your nervous system functioning, like coordination, reaction time and clumsiness.

  12. Get strong — duh!

  13. Maintain independence and longevity with each passing year. Because it’s not about living for as long as possible, but being as agile, independent, energised and unbreakable for as long as possible. That QUALITY of life.

  14. Maintain a youthful glow, posture, and ability to move how you want, when you want.

  15. Helps to manage blood sugar levels. Great for people with diabetes, adrenal fatigue and other hormonal dysregulation.

  16. Boosts self-esteem.

  17. Improves brain function — processing speed, memory and executive function, and is neuro-protective.

  18. Improves your mental resilience.

And guess what, the workouts don’t need to be boring, scary, or difficult. I take the guesswork out of the equation for my clients, and all they have to do is show up.
